Summer Green Tips
Forget the rhetoric about saving the planet for a moment . . . here are a few things we can all do at home to cut our energy consumption, thus save energy dollars:
1. Turn down the air conditioning. Turn down the AC and get a programmable thermostat. Use ceiling fans rather than AC. They are much more energy-efficient.
2. Dry your dishes and clothes with air.
Clothes dryers and dish washers use a lot of energy dollars. Fresh air is free.
3. Don't take a bath. Take short showers instead. A bath uses more water and heat than a simple shower.
4. Use energy-efficient lighting CFLs, compact fluorescent lights.
5. Install solar screens for your windows. They cut 75% of the heat coming through your windows without reducing visibility.
6. Plant deciduous trees on the south side of the house to block the summer sun.
