When a homeowner ask us about building green or sustainable remodeling options, we know they are environmentally conscious and interested in incorporating new technology that will make their home more comfortable, energy efficient and economical to maintain. Fortunately, almost any remodeling project today offers many opportunities to meet our clients' needs.
Our process begins by evaluating the structure in its present state, then we consider our local climate, identify any legal, social or resource issues, and balance all these with our clients' priorities to develop the scope of the renovations.
To fully evaluate the structure, we look at the four areas we consider to be key:
The thermal envelope, the air barrier between the interior conditioned or heated space, and the unconditioned spaces
The moisture barrier that keeps moisture, water in its many forms from infiltrating the structure
The mechanical systems are checked for efficiency and ultimate effectiveness
Structural defects such as rot, settling, mold
For a home to function well, the climate must be considered. The mechanical devices are vastly superior to those of even 10 years ago. Today, there is the advantage of state-of-the-art humidity control and because Long Island is an island surrounded by water, bulk moisture control is important.
Then, all the available green and sustainable resources must be considered. There are incentive programs that reduce to owner's expenses and for some there are financing options that apply to projects that include green elements. Depending on location, there may be local programs that help. All of these are considered for the clients' benefit before the process moves to design and cost considerations.
A green, sustainable living remodel produces not only a home that is more comfortable and cheaper to maintain, it's an investment in the owner's health and ultimate future. Homes remodeled with sustainability in mind are worth more when the day comes to offer it for sale.
