High Performance Homes
Laundry
High-performance-homes (HPHs) utilize appliances that use less energy and in the laundry room, less water. ENERGY STAR ® washers use half the energy of those not so rated and on average use 18 fewer gallons of water, but their energy savings don't stop there, ENERGY STAR ® washers operate more efficiently as well. By design, their spin cycle removes more water thus reducing the drying time which saves energy and reduces wear and tear on clothing.
Clothes dryers are not ENERGY STAR ® rated at this time. Most dryers use the same amount of energy. Those dryers that offer moisture sensors, which automatically turn off the appliance when it senses the load is dry do use less energy because of this feature. But, the sun dries clothes just as well, though not as quick and the clothes are left with a fresh fragrance and a crisp feel with which mechanical driers just can't compete.
By placing the laundry room light switch conveniently as the room is entered, it is more likely it will be used; replace old style bulbs with CFLs for additional savings.
